Sometimes I forget about this blog but I wanted to forward any of you that follow me to my new blog. I switched because the UT network wont let me access Weebly for some reason and most of my free time is found in computer labs or lounges on campus. Ive gotten an EVO 3D and am currently running an infected ROM. Waiting on a stable CyanogenMod to come out but feel free to jump on over to my new blog.

This will be a small update....Ive ordered an HTC Evo. Ill be creating a new section to my blog when I get it. Im keeping the G1 but it wont have service other than wifi and my google voice stuff.
Ive bounced around a fair amount over the last month. Mostly back and forth between Cyanogens CM5 and HTCClays SuperBad (A themed CM5). CM5 had several test versions that included a battery drain and wasnt worth blogging about. But not anymore! Cynogen has taken it out of the test phase and has released a full blown ROM. No battery drain and its up to what we have come to expect out of cyanogen. I was afraid that he had left the G1 scene when he got the Nexus one but it seems that he hasn't forgotten us after all! I highly suggest CM5 or the latest SuperBad ROM to anyone looking for an Eclair ROM. I personally like SuperBad for the darker theme and launcher. Currently I keep a backup of the latest SuperBad as my daily. Way to go guys. On to my latest foray in the world of android. This morning I decided to test out a Hero ROM. Its been at least 6 month since Ive even thought about trying one out. I pretty much gave up on them all together due to ever one I tried crashed on the home screen if the keyboard was opened. ZXTeam's HERO 2.1 ROM does this as well but the time for the home screen to recover is hardly noticeable. With that said Ill be testing this one out for a couple of day. Heres a video of it for now. Steve-O Alrighty, so OpenEclair was great for an Eclair rom but things were jut too slow. The lack of camera plus not being able to watch videos made me eventually move back to a doughnut ROM.
First lets discuss OpenEclair 1.3. OE was a great ROM it incorporated several features that were unavailable to the G1 users and that's what made it so appealing. It had live wallpapers and that nifty little Nexus launcher. Unfortunately these two features had there flaws that were bearable for those who really wanted them. The live wallpaperrs seemed to reset to a standard on live wallpaper just when you wernt looking. So much in fact, that I just stopped setting live wallpapers. On the other hand the Nexus launcher was great. It gave a new flash to the apps screen that you could show off to your freinds and that alone would have kept me on OE until another ROM came about that offered something better. Sadly the trade off for the launcher was that when leaving the app screen or a program you ended up with a black screen or a frozen main screen. Again, a bearable trade off for the latest and greatest but not desirable. Then entered HTCClays FastTest 3.1.1. Sure its a doughnut ROM but it was themed so that it had a similar launcher to the Nexus launcher and all the features, like camera and video, worked. I ended up trying it and I havent had to wait on my phone once since I switched. It truly is the fastest ROM Ive gotten thee chance to played with. It is on a different level as far as appearance goes. Most of the icons and everything else have been redesigned and they look down right professional. So far the only flaw I have run across is the fact that I cant download some apps from the market. Most work but I havent been able to get Replica Island....which is killing me. Its not even a terribly great game but the fact that I cant get it is making me obsess over it. As usual all the ROMs I test and try can be found at AndroidSpin Steve-O Alright so I meant to get back here and post an update to my trials with OpenEclair 1.2.2. its awesome. Its become my daily runner. From what I hear the guys behind it are working on a new beta now. From following their tweets it may have video support and many other improvements that were on the list. So far these are the issues that Ive found that could use a tune up.
Camera stalls at times but eventually works Live wallpapers must be reset on reboot 3d games dont render properly Navigation will FC if you change from portrait to landscape All of these issues are issues that I can live with for the privilege of having Eclair on my phone. I cant wait till the new update. Follow ChrisSoyars and wesgarner on twitter for the most up to date release info. Steve-O Alright, so I wasnt so impressed by 1.2.1. All I can say about 1.2.2 is WOW so far. Mind you Ive only had it flashed to my phone for about 5 min but its leaps better. More of the live wall papers are functional. They dont seem to lag as much (probably due to the fact that they have included a RAM hack in this version). It looks like they have also added the Nexus One home screen launcher. Heres the big one for me. My widgets work. The weather widget and twidget both work. This puts the ROM in the running for a daily setup for me. Im really excited about it and Ill give and update later tonight. Until then here is the link to the ROM for any who have a rooted android device.
http://db.androidspin.com/android_developer_display.asp?developerid=76 Steve-O Well OpenEclair was nifty. I enjoyed the live wallpaper at first. This is the first not 1.5 1.6 ROM that Ive tried that hasnt force closed when I opened the keyboard on the home screen. It kind of lagged but it didnt force close. It just stopped responding for about 30 seconds. 30 seconds seems so long when your trying to text some one.As with all Eclair ROMs right now there was no camera. A couple other main things to mention, twidgit and my weather widget wouldnt work. All in all it was worth giving a test run but its not a daily runner for me.
Live Wallpaper - The live wallpaper was pretty cool but I was under the impression that it responded to your touch. It doesnt or at least it didnt for me. The Nexus One background was the coolest. One thing to mention is that it wasnt a nice smooth transition from one home screen to another. The background seemed to lag for half a second. Applications - I noticed funny quirks with several apps. Cavedroid seemed to have some funky issue with the 3D engine that I hadnt had before. As I talked about above, my web connected widgets were a bust. Mostly things you could look over if you really loved the addition of live wallpapers. With all this said I knew I would be coming back soon. I use the camera alot with my projects and thats the kicker for me. I love to see new ROMs and enjoy trying them out. So keep em' coming and thanks for all you guys do for the Android community. Steve-O For the longest time Ive used Cyanogens ROMs on my G1 but Ive decided to test out OpenEclair. I flashed to it this morning and its been pretty cool so far. As with all other Elcair ROMs the camera function doesnt work. It also seems to hang up every now and then. Im going to give it a couple days before I run back to Cyanogen. Heres how I feel so far,
- Live wallpapers are not as cool as I thought - I miss my camera - Its pretty fast - No force closes...yet If your android phone is rooted I would recommend you try it out. Heres the link to the release. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624545 Steve-O |
